An 8-bit portrait of Audrey Tang, Taiwan's first Minister of Digital Affairs, made for the cover of RSA Journal (issue 2, 2024).
RSA Journal Editor Leah Clarkson explained the pick in a behind-the-scenes video: they wanted Audrey's portrait in pixel art specifically to echo how digital democracy platforms use gamification to bring people together.
Working from a reference photo, I built out her likeness and expression pixel by pixel, then animated the piece for the digital edition: a slow breathing motion and a soft light glare to give it a quiet, lifelike presence on screen.
The static version ran on the print cover; the animated version led the digital edition.
